Department of Ancient and Medieval History History
History
The Department of Ancient and Medieval History was established in 1978 through the unification of two academic groups: specialists in ancient history who had previously worked within the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, and medieval historians who had belonged to the Department of Historiography, Source Studies and Medieval History.
At the time of its establishment, the department included:

— Candidates of Historical Sciences, Associate Professors Yu. O. Holubkin, L. P. Kalutska, V. O. Latysheva, H. V. Frizman, A. I. Mytryaiev
— Senior Lecturer V. F. Meshcheriakov
More than 20 Candidate of Sciences dissertations have been defended at the department, as well as two Doctoral dissertations: one in Byzantine history (S. B. Sorochan) and one in the history of Ancient Rome (I. P. Serheiev).
The department offers general courses on the History of the Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Medieval History, and the History of the Medieval East, as well as a wide range of specialised courses, including:

Research Activities
Research undertaken by the department’s academic staff and postgraduate students focuses on:
— the history and archaeology of the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions in antiquity and the Middle Ages;
— the economy, social movements, and ideology in European countries during the transition from the early modern period to the modern and contemporary eras.
These research efforts have resulted in numerous monographs and more than 600 articles published in Ukrainian and international scholarly journals and collections.
The department has organised several archaeological expeditions.
— The first, from 1963 to 1984 under the leadership of V. I. Kadieiev, then from 1987 to 1990 under S. B. Sorochan, and from 1991 to 2014 under S. V. Diachkov, conducted excavations at Chersonesos Taurica and the Genoese fortress of Chembalo.
— The Northern Crimean Archaeological Expedition led by V. O. Latysheva until 1987 studied several ancient settlements within the Chersonesos state near its northern borders on the northwestern coast of Crimea.
— The “Citadel” Archaeological Expedition conducted research on the citadel of Chersonesos Taurica from the mid-1990s until 2014.
