Department of Economic Theory and Economic Management Methods

The Department of Economic Theory and Economic Management Methods is one of the oldest departments not only within the School of Economics, but also in the entire University. It traces its origins to the Department of Diplomacy and Political Economy, established together with the founding of the University in 1805.

In its present form, the department is one of the strongest in terms of academic staff both within the University and across Left-Bank Ukraine. Out of 18 Professors and Doctors of Economics working at the faculty, 10 are members of this department. The department also employs 5 Candidates of Sciences (Associate Professors) and 4 Senior Lecturers.
The department is headed by A. A. Hrytsenko, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Economics, Professor.
Such a highly qualified academic team ensures the training of specialists in economic sciences who meet the most modern professional standards.

The Department of Economic Theory and Economic Management Methods trains economists majoring in Economic Theory in full-time study mode. The foundation of the educational and professional programme in Economic Theory consists of courses in the humanities, natural sciences, and general economic disciplines.

One of the main activities of the department is the training of researchers who study a wide range of issues related to economic theory and practice. The department operates a postgraduate programme (PhD track), where 15–20 students annually undergo training and earn the degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences.

The department also offers a doctoral programme, where 2–3 specialists each year complete their training and obtain the degree of Doctor of Economic Sciences. Scholars who earn Candidate or Doctoral degrees are highly sought after by higher education institutions and research institutes in Ukraine, as well as abroad — in European countries, Canada, and the USA.

Graduates of the department hold senior positions in public administration and private business. Some have served as ministers and deputy ministers of Ukraine, chairs of committees in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and heads of major research institutes.
Since one of the department’s priorities is preparing academic staff for higher education institutions, graduates of the department can be found teaching at numerous universities and institutes. Many graduates also work in business structures — banks, insurance and investment companies, industrial enterprises, and commercial firms.
