Biography

Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine.

For many years, Vil Bakirov has been actively engaged in academic and pedagogical work in higher education. In 1990, he established and headed the first School of Sociology in Ukraine. From 1998 to 2021, he served as Rector of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

His scholarly research focuses on the role of classical universities in the intellectual development of society and the specifics of classical university education in the context of globalization and post-industrial challenges. His academic works are widely recognized, particularly those dedicated to the communicative paradigm of university democracy, innovation processes in higher education, and information and communication technologies in academia.

He is the Chair of the Editorial Board of the journal Universitates: Science and Education, Executive Editor of the scholarly collection Methodology, Theory, and Practice of Sociological Analysis of Modern Society, and Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University: Sociological Studies of Contemporary Society – Methodology, Theory, Methods. He is also a member of the editorial boards of the journals Higher Education of Ukraine, Ukrainian Society, Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing, Political Management, Psychology and Society, and Education in the Region: Political Science, Psychology, Communications.

Vil Bakirov has made significant contributions to the development and advancement of education and science as President of the Sociological Association of Ukraine, President of the Kharkiv Branch of the Minor Academy of Sciences, and a member of the State Prize Committee of Ukraine in Science and Technology named after B. E. Paton.

His work in the fields of science and education has earned national and international recognition. He has been awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th Class; holds the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine”; and is a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology. He has also been named Honorary Doctor of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Honorary Professor of M. P. Drahomanov National Pedagogical University, and Distinguished Professor of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. His achievements have been recognized with the Medal of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine “For Scientific Achievements,” the Ushynsky Medal of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, and the highest award of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – the Marin Drinov Medal on Ribbon. He is an Honorary Citizen of both the City of Kharkiv and the Kharkiv Region.

In honor of Vil Bakirov, a minor planet was named: asteroid (18731) Vil’bakirov = 1998 KW7, discovered by American astronomer Edward Bowell at Lowell Observatory.
