Dual Degree Programmes
The dual degree programme between two universities provides the opportunity to study partly at one university and partly at the partner university and to obtain degrees from both institutions. The partner universities conclude a separate agreement specifying the mutual recognition of courses completed at each institution.
Purpose of the Dual Degree Programme
The purpose of the dual degree programme between V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (KhNU), Ukraine, and Ulm University, Germany, is to further develop cooperation between Ukrainian and German universities, to expand Ukraine’s integration into the European Higher Education Area, and, at present, to support Ukrainian students and academic staff during the war and in the post-war recovery period.
Dual Bachelor’s Degree Programme
Since 2024, a dual Bachelor’s degree programme has been operating between the School of Mathematics and Economics of Ulm University and the School of Mathematics and Informatics of KhNU (the dual degree agreement was signed by both parties in 2023).
Students from three degree programmes of the School of Mathematics and Informatics of KhNU are eligible to participate.
Instruction is delivered:

in German during the period of study of Ukrainian students at Ulm University;
-
in English for German students during their studies in Kharkiv.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates receive:

a German Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and
-
a Ukrainian Bachelor’s degree in accordance with their original field of study.
Dual Master’s Degree Programme
Since 2025, a dual Master’s degree programme has been launched between the School of Mathematics and Economics of Ulm University and the School of Mathematics and Informatics of KhNU.
The programme is open to students enrolled in the Master’s programme in Data Science.
The language of instruction is English.
Upon completion, graduates are awarded the Master’s degree in Data Science and receive two diplomas: a German diploma and a Ukrainian diploma.

Academic Environment at Ulm University
During their studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Economics of Ulm University, students acquire knowledge and skills that are essential for successful work at the forefront of contemporary challenges, including strong analytical competencies and the application of mathematical models and methods across various fields, such as modern technologies, big data processing, artificial intelligence development, and risk and reliability management aimed at ensuring a safe and sustainable future.
The Faculty provides excellent learning conditions, has a highly professional academic staff, and maintains close cooperation with industry. All students receive substantial and attentive support whenever needed.
DAAD Support
In 2025, a DAAD grant was awarded to support the development of the dual degree programmes.
Within the framework of this grant, from 2026 to 2029, participation in the programme will be funded annually for:

3 Bachelor’s students and
-
2 Master’s students,
covering travel expenses and a scholarship for 10 months in the amount of EUR 992 per month.
In addition, top-performing students may receive additional scholarships, which may cover language training costs (applicable to Bachelor’s students).

Structure of the Dual Bachelor’s Degree Programme
The standard duration of Bachelor’s programmes in European universities, including Germany, is 3 years, while in Ukrainian universities it is 4 years.
The first year of study at a Ukrainian university is recognised in Germany as equivalent to the final year of upper secondary education.
For Ukrainian students, studies at Ulm University begin in the summer semester of the second academic year, which corresponds to the summer semester of the first year for Ulm University students.

During studies at Ulm University, courses from the KhNU curriculum are recognised, and vice versa. Detailed lists of courses and their recognition are provided in equivalence tables by specialisation or in the annexes to the dual degree agreement.
At the end of the programme, students prepare one Bachelor’s thesis, which is defended at both universities.
Graduates are awarded:

BSc in Mathematics at Ulm University, and
-
a Bachelor’s degree at KhNU in their respective specialisation (Fundamental Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Theoretical and Applied Informatics).
**Eligibility and Selection Procedure
(Dual Bachelor’s Degree Programme)**
Eligible applicants include students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of KhNU enrolled in:

Fundamental Mathematics,
-
Applied Mathematics,
-
Theoretical and Applied Informatics,
who demonstrate strong academic performance with a minimum average grade of 75 and hold a German language certificate at level B1 or higher.
Applications must be submitted to the school no later than the middle of the 3rd semester (September–October). Two academic references from faculty members must be attached.
The Faculty selection committee evaluates candidates based on:

motivation,

communication skills,

social adaptability,
-
emotional intelligence.
A joint selection committee of both universities conducts interviews and makes the final decision.
All selected participants are officially enrolled through the International Office of KhNU and the International Office of Ulm University.
Structure of the Dual Master’s Degree Programme
The standard duration of Master’s programmes in European universities, including Germany, is 2 years, which corresponds to the duration of research-oriented Master’s programmes in Ukraine. Therefore, Ukrainian students must enrol in a research-oriented Master’s programme at KhNU.
For Ukrainian students, studies at Ulm University begin in the winter semester of the second academic year, which is also the winter semester of the second year for Ulm University students.

Mutual recognition of courses applies in the same manner as in the Bachelor’s programme.
**Eligibility and Selection Procedure

Eligible applicants are students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of KhNU who:

hold a Bachelor’s degree,
-
are enrolled in the research-oriented Master’s programme in Data Science,
-
have a minimum Bachelor’s average grade of 75, and
-
possess an English language certificate at level B2 or higher (instruction at Ulm University is conducted in English).
Applications must be submitted no later than the middle of the 1st semester of Master’s studies (September–October of the previous year). Two academic references must be provided.

All participants are officially registered through the International Offices of both universities.
