Winter School from the German Research Center for Particle Physics DESY: Start of the Program

27 february 2023 year

On January 31, DESY, Germany's largest particle physics research center, started the "DESY Ukraine" Winter School.

The winter school will last until March 10. It provides an opportunity for Ukrainian physics students to gain research experience in one of the fields that the large international DESY laboratory deals with and which are traditional for the "Physics and Engineering Faculty" of Karazin University:

physics of accelerators;
astrophysics of elementary particles;
elementary particle physics;
photonics

Research projects involve various activities: hands-on work with detectors or experimental equipment, physical data analysis, software development, and theory. The project work is complemented by a lecture program that illuminates the physics of fundamental research at DESY.

Oleksandr Miryuk and Diana Shendryk, students of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Karazin University, as well as students of the Faculty of Physics Sofia Baletska and Kateryna Solovyan, are participating in the program.

They note: "DESY is a huge scientific center with many laboratories, accelerators, photon sources of various energies. Many of these places we were lucky enough to visit. It is an exciting experience to see modern equipment for basic research that is happening today and will continue in the future.

Informal events are also held regularly, where we have the opportunity to meet and communicate with employees, heads of scientific groups. From them, we can directly receive information about various areas of research and become interested in something new."
