Meeting with Luke Harding at Karazin University

On April 25, Karazin University hosted an open meeting with British journalist, author, and international correspondent for The Guardian, Luke Daniel Harding — the author of the book Invasion, recently published by Vivat in Kharkiv.

The event, titled "Invasion: How International Journalists Cover the War in Ukraine", brought together students, faculty, university administrators, and all interested participants in a hybrid format.

During the meeting, Luke Harding spoke about his personal experiences reporting from war zones, particularly from frontline cities in Ukraine. He shared the real-life stories that shaped his book and offered insights into the challenges faced by international journalists. Central to the discussion were issues of safety, ethics, the fight against disinformation, and the role of the media in modern conflicts.

Students of the Karazin Institute of International Relations and Travel Business eagerly joined the conversation. They asked questions about the ethical dimensions of reporting during wartime, how narratives about Ukraine are formed in Western media, to what extent journalists can influence government policies, whether there is international coordination on the information front, and how journalism affects global perceptions of the war.

The meeting with Luke Harding reaffirmed that Karazin University remains an open platform for dialogue, experience sharing, and international support for Ukraine.

“This is a story about life, about death, about people trying to survive and hold on,” Luke Harding told the students, encouraging them not to remain silent.

This event was not only a conversation about a book and the war, but also another step toward deeper understanding between the academic communities of Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
