Meeting with Mark Neville at YermilovCentre: A Conversation on Art, War, and Volunteering

8 july 2025 year

On July 4, a special event took place at the YermilovCentre — a meeting with world-renowned British photographer Mark Neville.

Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, British artist Mark Neville has founded the charitable organization Postcode Ukraine, combining the delivery of humanitarian aid to frontline cities with his own documentary practice.
Part of Postcode Ukraine’s current activity includes Neville’s new photobook titled Volunteer Journal, aimed at supporting mental health initiatives for various demographic groups in Ukraine. This photobook is also distributed free of charge across Europe and America to encourage international support for Ukraine.

The book features the experiences of individuals and charitable organizations that collaborate with Postcode Ukraine, including small grants and assistance for implementing complex projects. Among them are Kharkiv-based initiatives such as Animal Rescue, Peaceful Sky of Kharkiv (Myrne Nebo Kharkova), and Volunteer-68.

During the meeting, the artist presented his photography projects focused on the themes of war, community, and trauma, sharing his experience of working in conflict zones, particularly in Ukraine. Mark spoke about his work on Volunteer Journal, his role in co-leading a charitable organization, and his approach to contemporary photography that reflects the everyday lives of Ukrainians defending their homes, communities, and country. He also discussed the ethical questions that accompany modern photography and how art can be a tool for engaging with the principles of freedom and democracy — values that resonate with Western audiences.

The presentation served as a space for meaningful connection and warm conversation among those directly involved in volunteering, those interested in art, and those seeking support after being forcibly displaced to Kharkiv.
YermilovCentre continues its mission of uniting the artistic community of our city and serves as a platform for dialogue on the role of culture in society.
