World Oceans Day

8 june 2025 year

On June 8, the international community celebrates World Oceans Day — an event aimed at drawing attention to the importance of preserving marine and ocean ecosystems, their role in global climate stability, food security, and the development of civilization.

The environmental consequences of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine have affected, in particular, the Black Sea and its related aquatic ecosystems. The destruction of infrastructure facilities, including the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, has led to large-scale water pollution, the death of thousands of flora and fauna species, degradation of natural habitats, and disruption of hydrological balance.

Particular concern is caused by numerous cases of marine mammals’ deaths, especially dolphins, as well as the detection of dangerous concentrations of toxic substances in the Black Sea waters. These phenomena pose a serious threat not only to the region’s ecology but also to the overall condition of the Black Sea basin, which is part of the global oceanic system.

Karazin University continues systematic work in the scientific study of the environmental consequences of military aggression, ecological expertise, and educational activities aimed at fostering ecological responsibility. The university supports international principles of sustainable development and calls for strengthened global cooperation to protect the World Ocean and ensure the planet’s environmental safety.

Preserving the oceans means preserving the future of humanity.
