The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine, Martin Eger, visited Karazin Kharkiv National University.
During the visit, Martin Eger, accompanied by the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kharkiv, Tetiana Havrysh, met with the university administration and representatives of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration: Deputy Head of the KRMA, Yevhen Ivanov, Director of the Department of Economics and International Relations, Ivan Dudko, and Director of the Civil Protection Department, Ivan Sokol.
This marks Mr. Eger's second visit to Kharkiv and the university in the last three months. He emphasized the significance of supporting Kharkiv, considering it a beacon of freedom, with a European and democratic future, located in close proximity to the enemy.
During the meeting, the Ambassador had the opportunity to witness the damage to the main university building after the hostile shelling of the city center on January 2. He announced the decision of a German company specializing in window production to provide grant assistance to the university. Thanks to this aid and a grant from German partners in collaboration with a Ukrainian company producing double-glazed windows, windows are planned to be installed in the damaged premises of the School of Foreign Languages.
Vice-Rector Oleksandr Holovko stated, "We are grateful for the powerful support of the German community, attention to our university, and your personal courage to be here. For us, not only material support is crucial but also the opportunity to develop and implement joint projects, as Karazin collaborates with 25 higher education institutions in Germany in the field of natural and exact sciences."
Vice-Rector Anatoliy Babichev added that the university is currently exploring opportunities to safely involve participants in offline events. Karazin places a strong emphasis on working with schoolchildren in Kharkiv and the region. The implementation of the Karazin Weekends Legacy project is ongoing, where hundreds of schoolchildren attend open lectures on the popularization of science and education by university faculty every weekend. However, due to the resumption of regular shelling in the city, events are now conducted online.
During the meeting, they also discussed the situation in the region regarding shelling, despite which people continue to return, businesses develop, the educational process continues, educational events take place in shelters. Deputy Head of the KRMA Yevhen Ivanov reported that the Kharkiv region's community has grown by almost 530 thousand internally displaced persons and that everyone is contributing to ensuring the city's vital functions even in such challenging conditions.
Gratitude was expressed to the German community for their concern and support, for helping on the path to achieving our main goal - to endure and win!
