Opening of Portrait Gallery of Shevchenko Prize Winners

On Taras Shevchenko’s birthday, Karazin University opened a gallery of portraits of Karazinites who have won the Shevchenko Prize.

The event was attended by the University Administration headed by President, Academician Vil Bakirov; People’s Artist of Ukraine, Laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, Karazin University Doctor Honoris Causa Viktor Kovtun; Director of the Department of Science and Education of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Anzhelika Krutova; poetess Nina Suprunenko; poet Viacheslav Romanovskyi; Director of the Kharkiv Professional Higher College of Arts, Liubov Morozko; Dean of the School of Philology, Yurii Bezkhutryi, and others.

The Karazinites-Shevchenko Prize Winners depicted in the portraits are world-famous artists, poets, writers, and linguists whom the Ukrainian nation is identified with.

Among them are: writer, linguist, translator Borys Antonenko-Davydovych; poet, translator, literary critic Dmytro Bilous; literary critic Vasyl Borodin; poet Leonid Vysheslavskyi; actor Andrii Vodychev; writer Oles Honchar; artist Mykhailo Derehus; writer, translator Oksana Ivanenko; writer, playwright Oleksii Kolomiets; literary critic, linguist Ivan Svitlychnyi; publicist Nadiia Svitlychna; writer, poet Vadym Sobko; poet Volodymyr Sosiura; writer and poet Hryhir Tiutiunnyk; linguist, literary historian Yurii Shevelov. Viktor Kovtun became the author of the portraits that will now adorn the second floor of the University Main Building.

The event was opened with a performance by a bandura quartet from the Kharkiv Professional Higher College of Arts.

Vil Bakirov noted that with this event Karazin University joined the celebration of Taras Shevchenko’s birthday.

During the opening, Yurii Bezkhutryi briefly described the activities of Karazin University winners of the Shevchenko Prize and their contribution to Ukrainian culture.

Taras Shevchenko’s poems and those on Shevchenko’s themes were also performed during the opening.
