Lecture on Heorhiy Narbut’s “Ukrainian Alphabet” Held
On March 18, 2026, a lecture dedicated to Heorhiy Narbut’s “Ukrainian Alphabet” took place at the Central Scientific Library.
The renowned Ukrainian graphic artist Heorhiy Narbut (1886–1920) created the Ukrainian alphabet twice: in 1917 (14 letters) and in 1919 (3 letters). This series of graphic works is a masterful artistic achievement and a testament to his search for national identity. Each letter is not only an example of impeccable graphic design but also a fragment of the Ukrainian worldview as envisioned by the artist.
Narbut’s “Ukrainian Alphabet” tells a story of overcoming colonial influences and seeking a national identity, both in art and within oneself.
Thanks to Oleksandr Savchuk, publisher and staff member of the P. T. Tronko Center for Ukrainian Studies and Local Lore, participants of the event had the opportunity to explore the modern reprint of the “Ukrainian Alphabet.” This edition is not merely a reproduction but a carefully recreated artistic object, allowing viewers to see anew the details, symbolism, and artistic language of Narbut.
