V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University continues to develop modern engineering education. On June 19, the university held the grand opening of a new Production Automation Laboratory as part of the World Bank project in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine aimed at modernizing educational spaces and optimizing the higher education institution network. Importantly, the new laboratory is located in a secure facility, enabling students to acquire practical skills through offline learning.

The event was attended by the university’s Rector Tetiana Kahanovska, representatives of Festo — a leading manufacturer of automation equipment—as well as the academic staff of the Educational and Scientific Institute "UIPA".

A Learning Environment That Meets Modern Needs

One of the key assets of the laboratory is the Festo educational training system, which allows students to study the basics of electropneumatics, pneumatics, and the automation of production processes. The equipment is designed to support several technical educational programs, including:

  • Automation and Computer-Integrated Technologies

  • Industrial Engineering

  • Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electromechanics

A unique feature of the new laboratory is the packaging station—the first of its kind in Ukraine — based on Siemens controllers. In addition, the equipment includes 3D printers and modules for creating and printing 3D models.

Practical Skills with a Production Focus

“It is extremely important to us that the educational process is closely aligned with the needs of modern production. It’s about real, practical skills that are formed not just in classrooms but also in laboratories like this, using state-of-the-art equipment,” emphasized Rector Tetyana Kaganovska.

Thanks to cooperation with Festo, the university’s instructors have already completed several certified training programs in implementing the equipment in the educational process, programming industrial controllers, electropneumatics, and electrical engineering. Another training session—the final stage—is scheduled for August.

Karazin 3D Model School — for Students and Adults

The laboratory also serves as a space for career guidance and extracurricular activities. It hosts the Karazin 3D Model School, where classes are offered for both teenagers and adults. Participants learn to create their own 3D models, print them, and take their finished products home.

Today, Karazin University is not only a center of strong classical education but also a cutting-edge engineering environment that trains competitive professionals.
