Students of the Education and Research Institute “School of Physics and Technology” Take Part in an International Workshop in Italy
Students of the Education and Research Institute “School of Physics and Technology” — Artem Dehtiarov and Danylo Maslo — took part in the International Workshop on Thermal-Hydraulic Scaling for the Safety Demonstration of Small Modular Reactors, which was held on 16–18 December 2025 in the cities of Bologna and Piacenza.
The event focused on current challenges in scaling thermal-hydraulic processes to substantiate the safety of small modular reactors (SMRs) and brought together leading international experts, researchers, and students.
The participation of our students was made possible thanks to financial support from European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) within the ENEN2Plus programme.
The first day was dedicated to SMR phenomenology and key physical processes that require in-depth investigation.
Special attention was paid to modern concepts of passive safety systems, which are increasingly being integrated into approaches to ensuring the safety of small modular reactors. SMR phenomenology within the EASI-SMR project was also presented, with an emphasis on research priorities for safety demonstration.
On the second day, participants became acquainted with research results presented by EASI-SMR project partners from South Korea, Japan, and European countries.
Issues related to the applicability and limitations of scaling methodologies for SMRs, modern methods for assessing distortions, and the role of computational codes in reactor design were discussed. The day concluded with lively panel discussions.
The final day included a technical visit to the SIET Research Centre in Piacenza. Participants observed experimental facilities and learned directly from the centre’s researchers about the specifics of their work and the practical aspects of conducting research.
We congratulate the students on their participation in this prestigious international event and wish them further success in their scientific activities and international cooperation!
