Karazin University Students Meet Ukraine’s First Prosecutor General
A meeting with prominent Ukrainian legal scholar and statesman Viktor Shyshkin took place at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. He is a significant figure in the history of modern Ukraine, as Mr. Shyshkin served as the first Prosecutor General of Ukraine, was a Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (2006–2015), a Member of Parliament for three convocations, and holds the title of Honored Lawyer of Ukraine. He was directly involved in drafting the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, the 1991 Independence Referendum, and the first chapters of the Constitution of Ukraine.
During the meeting, Viktor Shyshkin presented his book Essays of My Public Life, in which, for the first time, he systematically recounts his memories of key historical events in which he participated personally. The author spoke about his professional journey, the formation of Ukrainian statehood, the behind-the-scenes processes of the early parliaments, as well as the creation of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine and the Constitution of Ukraine.
Students had an opportunity to communicate with the guest and ask questions about the development of an independent Ukrainian justice system, the constitutional process, and the current challenges facing the rule of law in Ukraine. The meeting took place in a warm and engaging atmosphere and became an important event for future legal professionals who aspire to contribute to the building of a modern legal culture in Ukraine.
