Representatives of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies Named after Kostiantyn Niemets Took Part in the “Urban Hackathon on Revitalization of Student Campus Spaces”

On September 15–20, students of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn Niemets, under the guidance of their lecturers, participated in the Urban Hackathon on the revitalization of student spaces, held at the School of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology with the financial support of the International Visegrad Fund.

The co-organizers of the Urban Hackathon were the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn Niemets of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the Silesian University of Technology, and the Department of Economic and Social Geography of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

On the first day of the Urban Hackathon, students attended introductory lectures on campus planning, urban space revitalization, and neuro-urbanism. The lecturers included Professor Tomasz Bradecki, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology; Professor Kostiantyn Mezentsev, Head of the Department of Economic and Social Geography at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; and lecturers of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn Niemets — Professor Kateryna Sehida, Associate Professor Kateryna Kravchenko, and Senior Lecturer Daria Venhryn. The discussions were moderated by Alina Pancewicz, Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the Silesian University of Technology, and doctoral student Dominika Weryszowa.

Over the next two days, students of the educational programs “Architecture and Urban Planning” (Silesian University of Technology), “Urban Studies and Urban Planning” (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), and “Economic and Social Geography and Regional Development” (Karazin University) worked in seven interdisciplinary teams on developing revitalization projects for the sports complex of Karazin University, which had been damaged by the war.

The Karazin student team included Olha Podpriatova, Viktoriia Stupak, Orest Dunikov, Anastasiia Prykhodko, Oksana Apanasenko, Oksana Moroz, and Mariia Orlenko.

The joint teams demonstrated outstanding results and presented seven creative concepts for the restoration of the Karazin sports complex. All participants and winners received commemorative gifts.

The “Urban Hackathon on Revitalization of Student Campus Spaces” within the V4 Gen Mini-Grant program, funded by the Visegrad Fund, does not end here. Ahead lies a series of further meetings and the joint preparation of a collective monograph!
