The University Mourns the Passing of Professor Volodymyr Prokopenko, Deputy Dean of the School of Philosophy for Scientific Affairs
With deep sorrow, we announce that on March 15, 2024, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Deputy Dean of the School of Philosophy for Scientific Work, Professor of the Department of Theoretical and Practical Philosophy named after Professor J.B. Shad of Karazin Kharkiv National University, Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Prokopenko, passed away.
Volodymyr Volodymyrovych studied at the School of Philosophy (1986) and defended his PhD thesis "Criticism as a Form of Dialectical Refutation" in 1990, and in 2012 he defended his doctoral thesis "Plato's Paideia." From 1994 to 2004, he worked at the Department of Philosophy and Political Science of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. Since 2004, he worked at the Department of Theoretical and Practical Philosophy named after Professor J.B. Shad of the School of Philosophy at Karazin Kharkiv National University.
For many years, Volodymyr Volodymyrovych served as the Deputy Chairman and a member of the specialized academic councils of Karazin Kharkiv National University, as well as the Chairman and a member of ad hoc specialized academic councils. He was a member of the editorial board of the Bulletin of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University "Philosophy. Philosophical Peripeteia," and was one of the founders (1996) of the first UNESCO philosophical department in Ukraine and the third in the world, the UNESCO "Department of Philosophy of Human Communication."
Volodymyr Prokopenko was a renowned expert in the history of philosophy, particularly in Plato's philosophy, Platonism and Aristotelianism, and philosophy of language. He first carried out a comprehensive historical-philosophical reconstruction of Plato's teaching on paideia as the basis of Platonic philosophy, developed and substantiated the paideutic approach to reading Plato's texts, established the differences between philosophical, sophistical, and rhetorical paideia, and put forward and substantiated the principle of the fundamentally unfinished nature of Platonic texts.
Volodymyr Prokopenko is the author of over 100 scientific works; his publications and video lectures attract the attention of the philosophical community. Volodymyr Volodymyrovych taught basic courses to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students of the School of Philosophy, supervised the research of doctoral students, and supervised bachelor's and master's qualification works.
The many years of Professor Volodymyr Prokopenko's work have been marked by the Gratitude of the Mayor of Kharkiv, Certificates of Appreciation from V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, and the Honorary Medal "Medal of V.N. Karazin."
