V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has learned with deep sorrow that on 1 January, at the age of 103, Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Marchenko passed away. He was an outstanding Ukrainian mathematician, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, an Honorary Doctor of Karazin University, a scholar of international renown, one of the founders of modern mathematical physics, and a prominent figure of the Kharkiv mathematical school.
The name of Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Marchenko is inseparably linked with our city. He played a key role in establishing Kharkiv as one of the leading centers of mathematical science. As one of the founders of the mathematical division at the B. I. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine, he contributed to the formation of a powerful research community closely connected with university science in Kharkiv. For many lecturers, researchers, and students of Karazin University, he was an unquestionable scientific and moral authority.
Volodymyr Oleksandrovych’s scholarly career was exceptional in both depth and scale. His fundamental research in the spectral theory of operators, inverse problems, and mathematical physics made a major contribution to the development of world science. The equation he discovered has become part of the golden heritage of mathematics and remains a basic tool in numerous areas of theoretical physics and applied research today.
Volodymyr Oleksandrovych was distinguished by remarkable integrity, intellectual honesty, and a profound sense of responsibility for every scientific word. His achievements were recognized with the highest state and academic awards of Ukraine and the world.
The passing of Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Marchenko is an irreparable loss for Ukrainian and global science. His name will remain in history as a symbol of devotion to scientific truth and high humanistic values.
