Renowned Physicist and Honored Professor Yuriy Berezhnoi Passes Away: The University Extends Its Condolences...

With deep sorrow, we announce that on the night of August 8-9, 2024, the esteemed scientist and engineer of Ukraine, Professor Yuriy Anatoliyovych Berezhnoi, passed away.

Yuriy Anatoliyovych was a distinguished theoretical physicist, an expert in quantum mechanics, and theoretical nuclear physics in Ukraine. He developed the theory of elastic and inelastic diffraction scattering of particles, taking into account the smearing of the nuclear surface, the theory of polarization phenomena in diffraction processes, and also proposed a new α-particle model with the dispersion of carbon, oxygen, and neon nuclei.

His scientific and teaching career was closely connected with Karazin University. After completing his studies and defending his Ph.D. dissertation, Yuriy Anatoliyovych began lecturing on theoretical nuclear physics at the university. He authored several monographs and textbooks on quantum mechanics and nuclear theory, three of which were co-written with Academician Oleksandr Akhiezer.

From 1979 to 2010, the scientist held the position of Head of the Department of Theoretical Nuclear Physics at Karazin University. Hundreds of graduates remember his lectures, teaching talent, and ability to engage with gratitude.

Yuriy Berezhnoi's scientific achievements were recognized both at the university and at the state level. He was a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology as part of a team with his students and colleagues for the work "Structure and Interaction of Atomic Nuclei in Elastic, Inelastic, and Radioactive Processes" (2019). The National Academy of Sciences twice honored him with its awards: the O. S. Davydov Prize (2000) and the K. D. Sinelnikov Prize (2016). The university honored him with the title of "Honored Professor of Kharkiv National University" (2005).

We deeply mourn and express our sincere condolences to Yuriy Anatoliyovych's family and loved ones, sharing the bitterness of their loss. The bright memory of him will forever remain in our hearts!
