Professor of the Department of Physical Geography and Cartography Oleksandr Zhemerov has passed away: the University extends its condolences...
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a man whose life was inseparably linked with geography, science, and the education of generations — Oleksandr Olehoyvch Zhemerov, Professor of the Department of Physical Geography and Cartography at the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Travel Business of Karazin University, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, and Associate Professor.
Born on 28 October 1948 in Makiivka, Donetsk region, he went from a pupil at a mathematics school to a recognized scholar, teacher, and mentor to thousands of students. For over half a century, his life was dedicated to the University, which he loved and served with unwavering devotion.
He was able to combine profound scientific research with tireless educational activity. Author of more than 230 scientific and educational-methodological works, including almost fifty textbooks and teaching manuals, Oleksandr Olehoyvch left in science and education a solid foundation on which new generations of teachers and researchers will continue to grow. His lectures were distinguished by their depth and humanity, and his teaching extended far beyond lecture halls — to school classrooms, student Olympiads, professional development courses, academic clubs, and conferences.
His life motto could be simply formulated: “To sow knowledge and love for geography wherever there are those willing to learn.” He remained faithful to this motto until his last days, continuing to be a wise mentor, a kind colleague, and a sincere human being.
Professor Zhemerov was not only a scientist and teacher but also an organizer of scientific life, long-standing conferences on issues of continuous geographical education, chairman of the jury of regional and national Olympiads, and an authority whose opinion was respected in educational circles not only in Ukraine but also beyond its borders.
The death of Oleksandr Olehoyvch is an irreparable loss for the University community, for Ukrainian geographical science, and for all who had the privilege of knowing him personally. The memory of him will live on in the grateful hearts of his students and colleagues, in the books and teaching manuals he authored, and in the numerous projects he brought to life.
