Scientific Conference Dedicated to the 220th Anniversary of Levko Borovykovskyi: Summary of the Results

On 4 March 2026, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University hosted the 11th All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference “Theoretical and Applied Aspects of Biography Studies: The Age of Romanticism in the Personal Dimension”, dedicated to the 220th anniversary of the birth of Levko Ivanovych Borovykovskyi.

The event was devoted to the anniversary of the renowned Ukrainian writer and a prominent representative of the Kharkiv School of Romanticism.

The anniversary of Levko Ivanovych Borovykovskyi has been officially recognized in the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “On the Commemoration of Memorable Dates and Anniversaries in 2026–2027.”

The conference was traditionally co-organized by several units of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University: the Department of Ukrainian Studies of the Education and Research Institute of Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Political Science; the Petro T. Tronko Center for Ukrainian Studies and Local History; the D. I. Bahalii Department of Ukrainian Studies; and the Central Scientific Library of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Starting this year, the circle of co-organizers also included the Institute of Biographical Research of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, the leading national center for research in biography studies.

During the plenary session, the participants were welcomed by Anton Panteleimonov, Vice-Rector for Research and Teaching; Volodymyr Popyk, Director of the Institute of Biographical Research of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine; Ivan Karpenko, Director of the Education and Research Institute of Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Political Science; Iryna Zhuravlova, Director of the Central Scientific Library; and Olha Vovk, Deputy Director of the Petro T. Tronko Center for Ukrainian Studies and Local History.

Plenary presentations were delivered by Artur Malynovskyi (Odesa) and Iryna Zhukova (Zaporizhzhia). Their reports highlighted the significance of Levko Ivanovych Borovykovskyi’s legacy in the context of the development of Romanticism in Ukraine and examined the specific vision of the Cossacks in his works as a stage in the formation of the Ukrainian historical myth.

Dmytro Lapko, a staff member of the Central Scientific Library of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, presented a virtual exhibition of works by Levko Ivanovych Borovykovskyi from the university library’s collections.

Larysa Zvirko, Director of the Novoavramivskyi Lyceum of the Khorol City Council (Poltava region), spoke about preserving the memory of the poet in his native land and presented a video recording of the laying of flowers at the poet’s grave on behalf of the conference participants.

Nadiia Liubovets, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Biographical Research of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, presented the monograph “Ukrainian Memoir Tradition: Evolution in the Dimensions of Time (12th Century – First Third of the 20th Century).”

The conference then continued its work in three sections:

  • “Features of Romanticism in Ukrainian Lands”

  • “Historiography and Source Studies of Biography Studies”

  • “Biography Studies: Theoretical and Applied Research.”
