International Mother Language Day
Every year on February 21, UNESCO observes International Mother Language Day worldwide. This day is intended to remind us of the importance of linguistic diversity, respect for cultural heritage, and every nation’s right to speak its own language.
A mother language is more than just words. It is the memory of a people, their worldview, and a way to perceive and make sense of the world. Through it, we inherit the wisdom of our ancestors and pass it on to those who come after us.
For Ukraine, International Mother Language Day holds special significance. The Ukrainian language has endured prohibitions and persecutions but survived — in songs and epic poems, in poetry and prose, and in the daily speech of millions. Today, it stands as a symbol of inner strength, unity, and national consciousness. The mother language unites society, affirms our identity, and confidently resonates as the voice of a free Ukraine.
From its earliest years, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has been a center for the development of Ukrainian humanities and linguistic studies. The university community continues to actively participate in the celebration of this day: organizing open lectures, discussions, language events, exhibitions of rare publications, and thematic educational initiatives.
On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, we encourage everyone to preserve, develop, and actively use the Ukrainian language — in education, science, everyday communication, and digital spaces.
