On February 28, 2025, the first lecture on the topic "Anthropocene: A Geographic Approach" was held at the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Konstantin Nemyts at the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism. The lecture was delivered by Josep Vila Subiros, a guest professor at Karazin University and a professor at the Department of Geography, University of Girona (Spain).

The event was part of a lecture series for the elective course "Paradigms of Socio-Geosystems" (outside the regular curriculum).

More than 40 students, postgraduate students, and faculty members attended the lecture.

In his lecture, Professor Josep Vila Subiros discussed the concept of the "Anthropocene," its temporal boundaries, highlighted the problems of global changes in nature caused by human activities, analyzed the dynamics of carbon dioxide emissions, and some socio-economic indicators that affect environmental changes (GDP, population size, level of urbanization, water usage, mineral fertilizers, transport development) worldwide and in the context of specific countries.

The lecture sparked interest among the attendees and led to an engaging discussion.

We thank Professor Josep Vila Subiros for the fascinating and informative lecture.

The next sessions of the elective course will be held according to the following schedule:

  • "Anthropocentrism and Planetary Boundaries: An Interdisciplinary Vision" (March 14, 2025, 9:00–10:00)
  • "From Conservation to Restoration of Biodiversity, Natural and Cultural Heritage: A New Perspective. New Paradigms" (March 28, 2025, 9:00–10:00)

We invite everyone to join!
