On May 16, the Karazin University community commemorates the 208th anniversary of the birth of Mykola Ivanovych Kostomarov — one of the most brilliant intellectuals and romantics of the 19th century, a historian, literary scholar, public figure, and co-founder of the first political organization in Ukraine.
Mykola Kostomarov was born into a family rooted in Ukrainian Cossacks and serfs. His life path is an example of strength of spirit and an unrelenting pursuit of knowledge. While studying at the School of History and Philology at Kharkiv (now Karazin) University, he demonstrated outstanding aptitude for the humanities and developed as a researcher of Ukrainian history, language, and culture.
It was at Karazin University that Kostomarov's passion for folklore, fascination with the Cossack era, and ideas of national revival truly flourished. Here, he joined a circle of Ukrainian romantics and began to shape his sociopolitical worldview.
Even during his time in Kharkiv, he became convinced that the Ukrainian people had a special historical mission — to be the driving force in liberating the Slavic nations from imperial oppression and serfdom. These convictions materialized in the creation of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood, the first attempts at social self-organization, and the writing of the programmatic work The Book of the Genesis of the Ukrainian People.
Kostomarov left behind not only a powerful scientific legacy but also a significant mark on the educational and enlightenment movement: he advocated for public education in the native language, initiated the establishment of Sunday schools, and raised issues of pedagogy and the development of a democratic society.
His legacy serves as a beacon for generations seeking a deeper understanding of Ukraine’s history and looking for meaning in it for the present. We remember and honor him!
