Karazin University Honors the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of the Prominent Physicist and University Alumnus Dmytro Volkov

3 july 2025 year

On July 3, 2025, we mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dmytro Vasylovych Volkov — an outstanding Ukrainian theoretical physicist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and a world-renowned scientist in the field of fundamental interactions of elementary particles, quantum field theory, and gravity.

After the end of World War II, Dmytro Volkov entered the School of Physics in 1947, and in 1951, he continued his studies at the newly established Nuclear Division of Kharkiv University (now Karazin University). It was here that his scientific growth began, eventually leading to a brilliant career in theoretical physics.

In 1956, he began working at the Ukrainian Institute of Physics and Technology, where he progressed from junior researcher to the head of the theoretical laboratory. His scientific activity covered a wide range of topics, with particular emphasis on his pioneering ideas in microworld supersymmetry and supergravity — a theory that unites the principles of quantum field theory and general relativity. These ideas became the foundation for the development of modern physical theories of the Universe and the solution of key problems in high-energy physics and astrophysics.

For his outstanding achievements, Dmytro Volkov was awarded the honorary title "Merited Figure of Science and Technology of Ukraine", as well as the Hans Thirring Award (1977, posthumously).

We are proud of the distinguished alumni of Karazin University!
