Karazin University Opens a New Safe Space: Student Life Continues Despite the War

22 april 2025 year

Karazin University has inaugurated a new safe space that will serve not only as a shelter but also as a fully functional educational hub for students and faculty. At a time when war poses daily challenges to our education system, Karazin University once again proves that even under the most difficult circumstances, student life can remain vibrant, engaging, and safe.

The new facility is designed to shelter up to 300 people, while up to 100 students can study comfortably in four fully equipped classrooms. A modern ventilation system, radiation protection, fire alarm system, and gas fire suppression system make this space not only reliable but also technologically advanced. The opening of this safe space was made possible thanks to government support — particularly from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine — the initiative of the university administration, the Karazin Charitable Foundation, and partner IT companies, including NIX Ukraine and EPAM Ukraine.

“We are creating such spaces because we believe that students should not simply ‘survive’ the years of war — they have the right to live, learn, grow, and shape themselves and their future. This is about the dignity of education, about humanity, about responsibility to those who have chosen Karazin University. We cannot stop the war — but we can create spaces where education, development, and human presence remain possible,” emphasized Tetyana Kaganovska, Rector of the University.

Expanding the number of safe spaces for educational and scientific activities is part of a broader vision shared by the university community — a community that never stops. Karazin University continues to actively develop its infrastructure, support science, attract partners, and confidently build the future — even amid the challenges of wartime.
