Today, the implementation and observance of inclusivity principles are more important than ever. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, the university aims to create equal opportunities for students and staff. Karazin University is adapting its educational environment to meet the needs of people with visual impairments and musculoskeletal conditions by equipping its spaces with specialized equipment and providing access to inclusive learning materials.
Karazin University representatives actively participate in international programs and projects focused on ensuring educational quality, reducing inequalities, developing modern learning approaches, and integrating innovative technologies into educational and scientific processes. Supporting the psycho-emotional well-being of students and teachers, implementing environmental initiatives, and promoting energy efficiency programs are also crucial aspects of the university’s activities.
The university is actively integrating specialized equipment, adapted educational materials, and individualized learning approaches for people with disabilities. An important part of this work involves promoting equal rights, academic mobility, and the full integration of every student into the educational process. One such initiative is the introduction of modern technology to create an inclusive space in the "Window on America" center at the Central Scientific Library. Recently, the center acquired a TOPAZ HD video magnifier.
In addition to traditional Braille books previously available to readers, the video magnifier was purchased with grant support from the U.S. Embassy. Currently, this is the only library space in Kharkiv equipped with assistive technology for people with visual impairments.
This specialized device is designed for individuals with partial or complete vision loss. It enables users to comfortably read printed materials or listen to English-language literature from the DAISY library of licensed materials — DAISY stands for Digital Access Information System. With various color modes available in the interface, each visitor can customize the display to meet their individual needs. Large, bright control buttons located below the screen ensure ease of use, even for first-time users of such equipment.
The device operates with MAGic Pro and JAWS for Windows programs. MAGic Pro allows users to freely browse the internet and access computer content by enlarging desired screen fragments. JAWS for Windows is a screen reader that vocalizes text, allowing individuals with complete vision loss to access information through audio, with the option to connect headphones if needed.
The center also features a 3D printer, which, in combination with the video magnifier, can help visitors with complete vision loss explore objects that are difficult to visualize due to their large scale. The "Window on America" center is also equipped for visits during power outages. Visitors can charge their devices and feel comfortable, as safety film has been installed on the windows for added protection.
Assistive technology makes Karazin University’s Central Scientific Library a welcoming space for all visitors, regardless of their visual abilities, age, education level, or place of study or work. Inclusivity and care for every visitor are university priorities, as every individual deserves equal access to knowledge and favorable conditions for learning and development.
