On January 27-28, 2021, the consortium of participants of the project "FUSILLI – Fostering the Urban Food System Transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation" within the largest European Union’s research and innovation program "Horizon 2020” held an online official kick-off meeting. Karazin University has joined the project. This Project has been funded from European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No 101000717.

The goal of the FUSILLI project is to support and facilitate the transition of modern cities to more sustainable food systems in line with the priorities of the FOOD2030 initiative.

Using modern experimental methods and active scientific exchange, the project participants will explore new ways of food production and distribution in European cities in order to promote the transformation of the urban food system through introducing innovative laboratories of life.

The project involves 34 organizations and institutions from 13 countries, including 12 urban municipalities, higher education institutions, research, non-governmental and business organizations.

Ukraine is represented in the project by the Kharkiv City Council and Karazin University, the only Ukrainian higher education institution to join the project.

The project envisages the creation of twelve “Food 2030 Living Labs” — open innovation ecosystems aimed at implementing various innovation activities at all stages of the food chain, including production and processing, distribution and logistics, consumption, food waste and food loss, and also management.

Experts from the FUSILLI Knowledge Community will work to develop urban food plans and together with partners will identify the best practices to support laboratory work, achieve an integrated and holistic transition to healthy, sustainable, inclusive, equitable, and cost-effective food systems through implemented and reproducible innovative urban policy.

Karazin University together with the Kharkiv City Council will actively promote effective implementation of the project and involvement of Ukrainian cities in the European urban food system.
