The History of the University is Created by People
Vyacheslav Gorbunov, a local historian and alumnus of the School of Mechanics and Mathematics (now the School of Mathematics and Computer Science), visited Karazin University.
During his student years, Vyacheslav Gorbunov actively participated in chess competitions. In 1992, he was awarded the Mikhail Shteinberg Cup for the best result in the under-25 age group at the XXV Chess Championship of the USSR, Voluntary Sports Society "Lokomotyv," Kharkiv. Today, Vyacheslav has donated this cup to our university.
Mikhail Shteinberg was a renowned chess player in the mid-20th century. He was the first chess player to become a master at the age of 14. In the country's championship semifinals, Shteinberg exceeded the master norm.
As Vyacheslav Gorbunov says, "I've had this cup for many years. Recently, I thought about it again and realized that it's wrong to keep this cup to myself. It should be in the university."
Now, another valuable artifact of the university's illustrious history is preserved at Karazin University! We sincerely thank Vyacheslav for this.
