Kharkiv continues to be a powerful scientific hub of Ukraine, even in the most challenging times. Karazin University had the honor of hosting distinguished guests— Nobel Laureate in Physics (2023) Ferenc Krausz, wife of Nobel Laureate in Physics (2020) Reinhard Genzel, professor and former staff member of the Department of Neonatology at the University of Munich Hospital Ursula Genzel-Borovychzeni, and Chief Advisor to the Nobel Foundation Per Josephson. During their visit to Kharkiv, they met with university administration, scientists, and students, expressing deep respect and support for Ukrainians who are relentlessly fighting for freedom and independence.
Ferenc Krausz conveyed words of solidarity from the European scientific community and assured readiness for further collaboration with Ukrainian researchers. The scientist delivered a lecture titled "From Capturing Subatomic Movements to Studying Human Health: How Curiosity-Driven Research Can Lead to Something Important for All of Us," during which he discussed experimental methods generating attosecond light pulses to study electron dynamics. The results of the research for which Ferenc Krausz, along with two fellow scientists, received the Nobel Prize, are used in various fields, including medicine and laser research.
Additionally, Mr. Krausz read a joint appeal from Nobel Laureates regarding the transfer of sanctioned Russian state assets for the restoration of Ukraine and the payment of compensation for the damage caused.
Karazin University expresses sincere gratitude for the support of our efforts to preserve and enhance the country’s scientific potential, as well as for the help provided to Ukrainians in the fight against the aggressor country. Such meetings prove that Ukrainian science is strong, unbreakable, and open.
