Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II
This year Ukrainians commemorate May 8th for the first time as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.
Today we honor the memory of all those who perished during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, the most horrific tragedy of the 20th century. This war claimed millions of innocent lives, shattered destinies, and brought suffering and devastation. Ukraine felt the brutality of the war twice, as it swept through its territory first from the west to the east and then from the east to the west.
This memorial date should remind the world that weakness, fear, and indecision of the international community on the eve of World War II encouraged aggressors to commit increasingly heinous crimes. Today, the international community has the opportunity to draw from that bitter experience and historical lessons. However, amidst the full-scale war against aggressors, Ukrainians are forced to endure horrific war crimes by the Russian army and its political-military leadership.
Today, we not only honor the memory of those who fell victim to war but also support those who currently stand guard over the integrity of our state. Our struggle continues every day as we defend our homeland and uphold the right to choose our own path to the future!
