Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty: The University Pays Tribute

29 january 2026 year

On 29 January, Ukraine commemorates the Heroes of Kruty — young defenders of the Ukrainian People’s Republic who, in 1918, stood up for Ukrainian statehood near the Kruty railway station. This event has become one of the enduring symbols of sacrifice, civic responsibility, and a conscious choice in favour of Ukraine’s freedom and independence.

The battle of Kruty involved military cadets, university students, and gymnasium pupils. Most of them were very young, yet their actions demonstrated a high level of national awareness and a willingness to defend the Ukrainian people’s right to their own state.

For the university community, the Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty holds particular significance. Throughout different historical periods, student youth has repeatedly become a driving force of social change, demonstrating active civic engagement and a strong sense of responsibility for the future of the country.

Today, in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the memory of the Heroes of Kruty takes on special relevance. It unites generations, affirms respect for history, and shapes an understanding of the true cost of independence.

Let us remember the feat of the young defenders at Kruty and bow our heads in respect to the courage of all those who are defending Ukraine today and fighting for its future.
