Birthday of Slavic Linguist and University Alumnus Yurii Shevelov: Karazin Community Remembers

Yurii Shevelov was born on December 17, 1908, in Kharkiv. A graduate and long-time lecturer of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, he became one of the scholars who laid the foundations of the modern academic understanding of the Ukrainian language.

Yurii Shevelov studied the history and development of the Ukrainian language, its dialects, phonology, and cultural context, consistently demonstrating the distinctiveness of the Ukrainian linguistic tradition. His scholarly works gained international recognition and significantly influenced the development of Ukrainian studies abroad.
