Birthday of Igor Garkusha, a specialist in plasma physics, Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Plasma Physics at the Institute of Physics and Technology: the University congratulates
Today is the 60th anniversary of the outstanding specialist in the field of plasma physics Igor Garkusha.
Igor Garkusha is a 1986 graduate of the Department of Plasma Physics of the School of Physics and Technology (now the Educational and Research Institute "School of Physics and Technology") of Kharkiv National University, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
He is the Deputy Director General of the National Science Center. Since 2010, he has been teaching a course in plasma dynamics at the university, and since 2018 he has been the head of the Department of Applied Physics and Plasma Physics at the Educational and Research Institute of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of the university.
His scientific works deal with the problems of plasma physics, controlled fusion, solid state physics, plasma-surface interaction, plasma diagnostics, and plasma technologies. He is the author of fundamental results in the physics of plasma accelerators, plasma dynamics of high energy densities, interaction of powerful plasma flows with magnetic fields and with materials of fusion reactors.
In his works, Igor Garkusha investigated the regularities of generation and transportation of quasi-stationary plasma flows, mechanisms of surface shielding in a fusion reactor under extreme particle and energy loads, developed methods of modifying and alloying surface layers of materials with pulsed plasma flows and creating new functional coatings, and technologies for low-temperature plasma sterilization.
His Hirsch index in the Scopus database is 24. His works have been cited 1651 times.
Igor Garkusha has put a lot of effort into successfully engaging Ukrainian scientists and educators in the European Horizon 2020 program, including gaining associate membership in the Euratom research and education program.
He is the head of the Ukrainian link in EUROfusion, which includes three institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and three leading universities. Karazin University is a unique example of attracting EU funds for the development of higher education in Ukraine in the field of controlled fusion physics within the framework of Euratom's Horizon 2020 program and, in particular, the Education work package of the EUROfusion European consortium. Participation in the Euratom education program will be extended in the next Horizon Europe framework program (2021-2027).
Congratulations on the holiday, we wish Igor Garkusha good health, inspiration and further creative success!
