The 80th Anniversary of Honorary Doctor of Karazin Kharkiv National University, Professor Zenon Kogut: The University Congratulates!

On January 18, the renowned historian and Ukraine scholar, Professor Zenon Kogut, celebrated his 80th birthday.

Zenon Kogut was born in Lviv, Ukraine, and later emigrated to the United States with his family. He studied at a college in Philadelphia and at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his doctorate in 1975. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, the University of Michigan, and Harvard University. Additionally, he worked as an expert for the Library of Congress and the U.S. Department of Defense.

From 1994 to 2012, he served as the head of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, the most authoritative institution for Ukrainian studies outside Ukraine. Currently, he holds the position of Professor Emeritus in the history department at the University of Alberta.

Zenon Kogut was a member of the organizing committee for the Canada Ukraine Legislative and Intergovernmental Project. This initiative facilitated working visits, seminars, roundtable discussions, and meetings between Ukrainian legislators and government officials with their Canadian counterparts on issues such as land privatization and culture. He also led the Kovalsky Program, supporting academic research projects in Eastern and Southern Ukraine. Furthermore, he co-founded and served as an academic advisor for the Canadian-Ukrainian Archaeological Project in Baturyn.

As an author of numerous scholarly works, his research primarily focused on the history of Ukraine, especially the 18th to 19th centuries. His academic interests also extended to Ukrainian political culture, historiography, elite history, national issues, and the national identity of East Slavic peoples.

In 2009, Zenon Kogut was honored with the Order of Merit, Third Class, and he received an honorary doctorate from Karazin Kharkiv National University in 2005.
