315th Anniversary of the First Ukrainian Constitution

16 april 2025 year

On April 16 (April 5, Old Style), Ukraine commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the first Ukrainian Constitution — a document of exceptional historical and legal significance. The Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk, adopted in 1710, was one of the earliest attempts in Europe to enshrine the principles of separation of powers, the rule of law, and popular representation.

This document not only regulated the powers of the Hetman but also outlined mechanisms for overseeing his actions, providing for the establishment of the General Council — a prototype of a parliament. The Constitution also emphasized the role of the Orthodox faith, the autonomy of the Cossack state, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

For the Karazin University community — one of the leading centers of the humanities and historical research in Ukraine — this date is an opportunity to honor the continuity of Ukrainian statehood and the depth of national legal thought. A document created more than three centuries ago reflects the profound political culture and the enduring aspiration of Ukrainians for self-governance — values that remain relevant to this day.
