223 years since the birth of Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi: the University remembers
Mykhailo Ostrohradsky was one of the most prominent Ukrainian mathematicians of the 19th century, whose contribution to science not only brought him worldwide recognition but also forever engraved his name in history.
Mykhailo Vasylovych was born on 24 September 1801 in Poltava region. He always had close ties with Ukraine, particularly with our university.
It was within the walls of Karazin University that Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi gained his first deep knowledge of mathematics, which later led him to incredible achievements in differential equations, elasticity theory and hydrodynamics. His scientific research was extremely broad and versatile — the mathematician dealt with both applied taks and fundamental scientific issues. Ostrogradsky was elected an honorary member of many universities in Europe, but Kharkiv remained the place where he began his scientific career, which formed him as a scientist.
His ties with Karazin University are still important today: we are not only proud of the achievements of the outstanding scientist, but also continue his tradition of scientific research and the pursuit of knowledge. Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi’s heritage reminds us that a genius born in Ukraine has the power to change the world.
