9 july 2025 year

The media group "Nakypilo" has published an episode of “Kharkiv Stories” dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Vyacheslavovych Netushyl (1850–1928), a renowned historian, philologist, vice-rector, and rector of Kharkiv (now Karazin) University. The distinguished scholar was at the center of a conversation between well-known host and journalist Filip Dikan and Oleksandr Novak — PhD in History and Archaeology, leading lecturer, and acting director of the Museum of History at the Museum Complex of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Kharkiv University played a pivotal role in Ivan Netushyl’s life, as his teaching and scientific work from 1884 to 1921 was inextricably linked to our institution. He also served as rector during a turbulent era, remaining devoted to the ideals of scientific service and the protection of both students and the academic staff.

During the radio broadcast featuring Filip Dikan and Oleksandr Novak, special attention was given to Ivan Netushyl’s scholarly contributions. In addition to his excellent command of Latin, Ivan Vyacheslavovych was known for his historical research on the early period of Roman history and the issues surrounding the Christianization of the Roman Empire. He actively studied ancient Roman antiquities.

The Museum of History at Karazin University’s museum complex preserves the Netushyl family’s archival collection. In addition to documents related to the life of Ivan Vyacheslavovych, it includes materials on Volodymyr Netushyl, a mining engineer repressed during the Shakhty Trial, and Anatolii Netushyl, a scientist in electrical engineering, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and academician.

Karazin University is proud of its 220-year history and continues to uphold academic traditions and values!
