On April 30, Karazin University honors the birthday of Simon Kuznets — its distinguished alumnus and Nobel Prize laureate in Economics!
Simon Abramovich Kuznets was born in 1901 in Kharkiv and graduated from the School of Law of Kharkiv University — today known as Karazin University.
His scholarly interests were centered around economic and statistical research, including investment dynamics, the structure of capital expenditures, and the evolution of capital accumulation. His pioneering work in calculating national income made a significant contribution to global economic science.
Kuznets was the first to study the interdependencies between economic fluctuations and long-term growth. He is renowned for developing the theory of building cycles — economic fluctuations lasting 18–25 years, linked to generational housing renewal.
In 1971, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
Karazin University proudly honors the memory of this outstanding graduate — a scholar who revolutionized the way we measure economies and left a lasting legacy in global science.
