Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business and Food Technologies
The Department was established in January 2018 as the Department of International E-Commerce and Hotel and Restaurant Business. Its creation was driven by modern trends in the development of the global economy, which many economists define as a “service economy.”
Since 2024, it has been known as the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business and Food Technologies.
Educational Programs
The Department trains specialists at the following levels:
- 
Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management 
- 
Bachelor’s degree in Craft Food Technologies 
- 
Master’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management 
The teaching staff consists of highly qualified professionals, most with practical experience in their field. They provide instruction in a wide range of compulsory and elective economic, technical, and general disciplines. The academic environment enables the preparation of highly skilled professionals capable of working in an international context. In addition, graduates of the bachelor’s program acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to start their own business.
Education is offered on both contract and state-funded bases. Forms of study include full-time and part-time (distance) learning.
Since 2022, students have also participated in the scholarship program “Ukraine Digital: Education in Times of Crisis.”
The educational process emphasizes the extensive use of modern software and information technologies. Lecturers apply innovative teaching methods developed through internships and advanced training. A virtual learning environment is also provided on the MOODLE platform, offering full online support.
Graduates of the Department gain a high level of proficiency in several foreign languages as well as in modern information systems and technologies.
The educational process involves other departments of the Karazin Institute of International Relations, as well as lecturers from the Schools of Computer Science and Foreign Languages of Karazin University. Leading national and international HoReCa and IT professionals are also engaged to deliver lectures, seminars, and training sessions.
Research Activities
The Department’s research focuses on the development of health-oriented food technologies and innovation management in the hotel and restaurant industry and international e-commerce (more details can be found on the personal pages of academic staff).
Research results are published in monographs, and one patented invention concerns a method for obtaining malt.
Both faculty and students actively participate in scientific conferences, internships, and academic mobility programs.
An annual national student scientific and practical conference is held on current issues in international e-commerce and hotel and restaurant management.
Since 2022, the Department has been implementing three international projects:

International and National Cooperation
In 2019, together with the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Karazin University, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Linnaeus University (Sweden), the Department received a grant for the Jean Monnet Module “Infrastructure that United Europe: History, Present, and Future Vision.”
Since 2022, the Department has been actively cooperating with South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences and Karlsruhe University of Education (Germany) on several projects, including the Jean Monnet Module “Sustainable Thinking and Entrepreneurship.”
The Jean Monnet Module “Business Models for Sustainable Development: Challenges and Digital Transformation” is implemented jointly with the University of West Attica (Greece).
In 2021, the Department organized an International Summer School-Hackathon (StreamUP Project) together with the Karlsruhe University of Education (Germany) and the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (Germany) with the support of the European Union, EFR, NRW, and the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation of the South Westphalia region in Germany.
Students also had short-term academic mobility opportunities in Berlin.
The Department cooperates with the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (Germany) in implementing the DAAD-supported scholarship program “Ukraine Digital: Ensuring Academic Success in Times of Crisis.”
The program enables Karazin University lecturers to design English-language courses for students, who receive a €600 scholarship to study and participate in additional non-formal education courses.
The Department also collaborates on student and faculty mobility with:

A cooperation agreement has been signed with the Optima hotel chain and Hotel Victoria to facilitate student internships and staff professional development.
Since 2023, students of the Department have also had opportunities for internships in Italy and Greece.
