Department of Pediatrics
History
The Department of Pediatrics was established in 1997 as part of the School of Medicine under the structure of the Department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology. In 2008, it became an independent Department of Pediatrics. Since its foundation, the Department has been headed by Professor Mykola Mykolaiovych Koreniev, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.
Professor Koreniev is the author of more than 250 scientific publications, 6 monographs, and 7 patents. Under his supervision, 15 PhD theses have been defended. He has been twice awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, the Excellence in Healthcare badge, and a silver medal for the best innovative medical project in Eastern Ukraine in 1999.
The Department’s academic team — 6 Doctors of Medical Sciences and 5 PhDs in Medicine — works on current issues in pediatric cardiology, rheumatology, and pediatric infectious diseases. Their research includes developing preventive and therapeutic programs for adolescents with primary arterial hypertension, investigating mechanisms of chronic heart failure progression in children and adolescents with myocardial diseases, and technologies for preventing osteoarthritis progression associated with inflammatory or dysplastic joint disorders in adolescents.
The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident shaped another critical research direction — the study of the health condition of children and adolescents from radiation-risk families. The Department developed a program for long-term medical monitoring of children evacuated from contaminated areas and those born to Chornobyl liquidators. The Department also researches the health of children with disabilities due to chronic somatic diseases, focusing on social and psychological rehabilitation, career guidance, and medical-social support.
Following classical university traditions, the Department actively engages students in research starting from their second year of studies. Their results are presented at meetings of the student scientific club, student research conferences, and are published in academic journals and collections.
At the Department of Pediatrics, the following disciplines are taught to medical students beginning from the 2nd year:
