Romano-Germanic Philolog

The Department of Romanо-Germanic Philology is one of the most dynamic departments of the School of Foreign Languages at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. It was established in 2022 on the basis of the Department of German Philology and Translation and the Department of Romance Philology and Translation. The department combines the traditions of teaching classical European languages with modern trends in language education, translation studies, and intercultural communication.

The Department's teaching staff provides courses in French, German, Spanish, and Italian to students of the School of Foreign Languages. The department employs 6 professors and doctors of science, 16 candidates of science and associate professors, 1 doctor of philosophy, 12 senior lecturers, and 8 lecturers, which testifies to the strong scientific and pedagogical potential of the team.

Among the department's teaching staff is a recipient of the Order of Academic Palms of the French Republic for outstanding achievements in education and the promotion of French language and culture, a certified methodologist for training examiners for the DELF-DALF international French language exams, a regional tutor for the Franco-Ukrainian -Ukrainian program for the professional development of French language teachers PRO-FLE, members of the jury of the international French language exam DELF-DALF at the French Alliance in Kharkiv, members of the jury of all-Ukrainian student and school subject Olympiads in French, German, Spanish, and Italian. Interns from France and Italy, highly qualified practicing translators, work with the department's students. DAAD speakers work at the department on a permanent basis, currently guest speaker Sebastian Unger.

Teachers conduct lectures, practical classes, and individual consultations, monitor students' knowledge levels, supervise internships, develop educational programs and curriculum, publish textbooks and teaching aids, develop tools for assessing students' academic achievements, develop and implement new forms, methods, and technologies of teaching, and engage in scientific and organizational work.

Every year, the department staff organize visits for students to foreign literature libraries (Nuremberg House, German Reading Room, and Austrian Reading Room) and encourage students to participate in scholarship programs offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Erasmus, and PASCH.

The department actively develops international cooperation with leading European institutions. The department's partners include the embassies of France, Spain, Italy, and Argentina, the French Alliance, the Agency for Francophone Universities (AUF), the Association of Hispanists of Ukraine, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Goethe Institute, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The department has an extensive network of international cooperation agreements with universities and research institutes, including:

  • The Institute of Philosophy and Psychology (Paris, France),
  • The University of Valladolid (Segovia, Spain),
  • the Universities of Cadiz, Salamanca, Messina, Padua, Palermo, Parma, and La Sapienza in Rome,
  • the Catholic University of Ružomberok (Slovakia),
  • Galileo Ferraris State Scientific Lyceum (Varese, Italy).

The department is headed by Iryna Serhiivna Kholmogortseva, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, who continues the traditions of the school's scientific school and promotes the development of international academic contacts.
