Lecture by the researcher of the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, professor of Michigan State University Matthew Pauly: we invite you to join
On March 13, a leading historian, researcher of the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, author of many historical books and monographs, professor of Michigan State University, Matthew Pauly, will give a lecture for Karazin University as a guest lecturer.
This lecture continues the series of lectures under the auspices of Karazin University "One Lecture Away from Victory: Speakers of the World in Support of Karazin University".
At the University of Michigan, Matthew Pauly is a core faculty member at the Center for European and Eurasian Studies and Peace and Justice Studies. The scholar is also an affiliated lecturer at the Michael and Elaine Serling Institute for Contemporary Israel Studies. He is interested in the history of national identity, childhood and youth, education, philanthropy and medicine.
The professor is currently completing two books: the textbook "Travelling Europe: Key Moments in 20th Century History" and the research monograph "City of Children: Juvenile Poverty, Crime, and Rescue in Odessa." The latest project explores the desire of Odessa residents to care for marginalized children at the turn of the 20th century, as well as how institutions and programs for social protection of children were simultaneously supported and transformed during the Soviet regime.
Professor Pauly is a member of the advisory board of H-Ukraine and the educational website "Seventeen Moments of Soviet History". H-Ukraine promotes scientific and intellectual discussion about Ukrainian studies and history. This network aims to make available the latest scientific research, educational resources and other materials related to the academic study of Ukraine.
Matthew Pauly is a member of the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society in the USA and a former member of the editorial board of the journal "Problems of the History of Ukraine" (Institute of the History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).
He is also a Fulbright Scholar and recipient of grants from the International Research and Exchange Council (IREX), the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC), the American Councils on International Education (ACTR/ACCELS), the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies (CFUS), the Scientific Society of Shevchenko in the United States, as well as the US Department of Education's Foreign Language and Country Studies (FLAS) Program, the US State Department's Fassel Program at the US Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he worked on human rights and rule of law research.
Matthew Pauly is the author of Breaking the Language: Language, Education, and Power in Soviet Ukraine on early Soviet nationality policy and the intersection of national identity, education, and childhood in the Soviet Union. That is what he will tell the Karazin students about. Therefore, please familiarize yourself with the book before the event.
